Royal rift eases: King Charles and Prince Harry reunite after 19 months

Prince Harry met his father, King Charles III at Clarence House in London on Wednesday. This is the first time the father-son duo met since February 2024.

During a roughly 54-minute visit to the royal residence, Buckingham Palace confirmed that the King had private tea with his son.

In response to questions from reporters at the Invictus Games organisation’s reception, Harry said, “Yes, he’s great” about his father.

The meeting is being viewed as a first step towards restoring confidence in what has appeared to be a severe family rift and fostering better father-son relation.

On Wednesday afternoon, Charles left Scotland for London. This week, Harry, who has lived in the United States since 2020, has been in the United Kingdom for charitable purposes.

In a heartfelt May BBC interview, Harry expressed his desire to mend fences saying: “I would love a reconciliation with my family.”

The last time they were together was shortly after Harry flew to the UK for a quick meeting following the King’s cancer diagnosis last year.

In what has appeared to be a sometimes tense relationship, the prince has subsequently visited the UK, including for court proceedings, but he has not met his father.

The Buckingham Palace said it would not comment further on the private meeting, until Harry was driven off to his next event.

Amid speculation whether he would meet with his father, the prince returned to the UK on Monday and has since carried out several charitable engagements in Nottingham and London.

Harry, his wife Meghan Markle, and their two children, who were not on the trip, currently reside in California.

The prince has already expressed his frustration at not being able to speak with his father, especially during times when the King’s health was a concern.

“There’s no point continuing to fight any more, life is precious,” Harry said in the interview.

Charles and Harry’s meeting follows rumours that attempts are being made to resolve the family’s rift.

Newspaper headlines referring to a “peace summit” were published in July after representatives of Harry and Buckingham Palace were seen together at a meeting in London.

However, Harry and Prince William have made different public engagement plans, so there has been no indication that they would meet this week.

On the third anniversary of his grandmother Queen Elizabeth II’s passing, Harry placed a wreath at her grave on Monday.

William and Kate Middleton were at a Women’s Institute meeting celebrating the late Queen’s memory less than ten miles away.
