British human rights lawyer Amal Clooney could soon be barred from entering the United States because of her role in a case pertaining to her work with the International Criminal Court (ICC).
According to the Financial Times, UK Foreign Office has reportedly warned several senior lawyers including Amal Clooney that they could face entry ban to the US or sanctions. Amal reportedly influenced the ICC to charge Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant with war crimes in Gaza.
US president Donald Trump signed an executive order in February stating the ICC “has engaged in illegitimate and baseless actions targeting America and our close ally Israel.”
The executive order also stated that the ICC has further abused its power by “issuing baseless arrest warrants targeting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Former Minister of Defense Yoav Gallant.”
“The United States will impose tangible and significant consequences on those responsible for the ICC’s transgressions, some of which may include the blocking of property and assets, as well as the suspension of entry into the United States of ICC officials, employees, and agents, as well as their immediate family members, as their entry into our Nation would be detrimental to the interests of the United States,” it read.
Hollywood actor George Clooney and Amal, married for 11 years, have temporarily relocated to New York City while the former stars on Broadway in “Good Night, and Good Luck” about Edward R. Murrow.
The couple has twin daughters and lives primarily in France, with residences in the US. Clooney, 63, is an American citizen. They also own residences in London and Lake Como, Italy.
The executive order listed British ICC prosecutor Karim Khan as subject to U.S. sanctions. Amal practices law in the US and England. The 47-year-old grew up in Britain after being born in Lebanon.
In response to Hamas’ sudden attack on Israel in October 2023, which has resulted in thousands of deaths in Gaza, the ICC issued arrest warrants for Netanyahu and Gallant last year. Three since-deceased Hamas officials were also charged by the court.
UK Foreign Office and the Clooney’s representatives have been contacted by Fox News Digital for comment.
