OpenAI to launch ChatGPT ads: How advertising will change the AI chatbot

The era of entirely ad-free AI is shifting. OpenAI officially announced that it will soon begin testing advertisements within ChatGPT, marking a significant pivot in the business model of the world’s most famous AI chatbot. As the company looks to offset the staggering costs of running high-performance artificial intelligence, it is turning to a revenue stream long dominated by rivals like Google and Meta.

How ChatGPT ads will work

According to the company, ChatGPT advertising will initially target users on the free tier and those on the new “ChatGPT Go” $8 per month plan. The ads are designed to be “thoughtful and tasteful,” appearing primarily at the bottom of the interface.

OpenAI emphasised that these sponsored products will only appear when relevant to the current conversation. For example, if a user asks for travel tips, a clearly labelled ad for a booking service might appear below the generated response.

Maintaining user trust and privacy

A major concern for users is whether AI monetisation will compromise the quality of information. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman addressed this directly on social media, stating, “Most importantly: ads will not influence the answers ChatGPT gives you.”

Key safety and privacy features include:

  • No influence on answers: ChatGPT’s organic responses will remain objective and won’t be “nudged” by advertisers.
  • Data privacy: OpenAI claims it will not use personal information or private chat prompts to build advertising profiles.
  • Clear labelling: All sponsored content will be distinctly separated from the AI’s organic output.
  • Restricted categories: Ads will not appear for sensitive topics like health, politics, or mental health, and will not be shown to users under 18.

High cost of Artificial Intelligence

While OpenAI is currently valued at approximately $500 billion, the cost of innovation is immense. The company faces over $1 trillion in financial obligations for the Nvidia chips and data centers required to power its models.

By introducing ChatGPT ads, OpenAI is moving closer to the traditional tech business model: if the service is free, advertising helps pay the bills. This move is seen by industry analysts as a necessary step to ensure the long-term sustainability of the platform as it competes with Google Gemini and other AI assistants.

What’s next for OpenAI users?

The rollout will begin as a test in the United States over the coming weeks. While paid “Plus” and “Team” subscribers will remain ad-free for now, the introduction of ads marks a defining moment in the generative AI race. As OpenAI evolves into a “public benefit corporation,” it must now balance its mission of benefiting humanity with the economic reality of the multibillion-dollar digital advertising market.
