Gone but not forgotten. Shannen Doherty received a tribute from the daughter of her late Beverly Hills, 90210 co-star, Luke Perry, in the wake of her death on Saturday.
Sophie Perry, 24, honored Doherty with a post on her Instagram Story, sharing a throwback photo of the former co-stars. In the sepia-toned shot, the actors are all glammed up and flashing huge smiles as Luke playfully holds Doherty’s necklace between his teeth. Sophie added a simple white heart emoji to her post.
The duo previously played the iconic love interests Brenda Walsh and Dylan McKay on the beloved show.
Doherty, who was also known for her role as Prue Halliwell on Charmed, died on Saturday, July 13, following a lengthy cancer battle. She was 53.
“It is with a heavy heart that I confirm the passing of actress, Shannen Doherty,” the actress’s longtime publicist, Leslie Sloane, told ET in a statement at the time. “On Saturday, July 13th she lost her battle with cancer after many years of fighting the disease.”
The statement continued, “The devoted daughter, sister, aunt and friend was surrounded by her loved ones as well as her dog, Bowie. The family asks for their privacy at this time so they can grieve in peace.”
In June, Doherty emotionally revealed on her Let’s Be Clear podcast that she would be undergoing chemotherapy for her stage 4 breast cancer after the makeup of her cancer cells progressed.
Luke, who was best known for his roles on Beverly Hills, 90210 and Riverdale, died in March 2019 after suffering a “massive stroke.” He was 52.
A source told ET at the time that his daughter was in Africa on a humanitarian mission at the time of his stroke, but was able to fly back to be by her father’s side during his last days.
Doherty previously opened up to ET about Luke’s legacy when she reprised her iconic role on the Beverly Hills, 90210 reunion series, BH90210, in his honor.
“I wasn’t attached [before Perry’s death]… and it wasn’t long after he passed that I finally was like, ‘OK, yes,'” Doherty revealed of joining BH90210. “I thought it was going to do well with or without me, to be honest. For me, replaying Brenda was something I said I wouldn’t do twice and I’ve replayed her now twice, so I guess I could never say I’m never going to do something again because I end up doing it.”
Doherty — who also guest starred on Perry’s other project, Riverdale, in honor of the late actor — also spoke of Perry’s impact on the hit ’90s series, proclaiming that “he was one of the most important parts of 90210.”
“For me, I felt like it was honoring him and his memory and what he meant to the audience and the fans and to all of us,” she said of returning to the role. “As his on-set family, I felt like it was an important time for all of us to come together to honor him.”
Over the weekend, Doherty was remembered for her career, life and friendship by a number of her former co-stars.
“So young – so sad. May you RIP Shannon. I know Luke is there with open arms to love you,” Gabrielle Carteris wrote on Instagram.
Meanwhile, Jennie Garth penned an emotional tribute to her late friend.
“I am still processing my tremendous grief over the loss of my long time friend Shannen, the woman I have often described as one of the strongest people I have ever known. Our connection was real and honest. We were so often pitted against each other but none of that reflected the truth of our real relationship which was one built on mutual respect and admiration,” she wrote. “She was courageous, passionate, determined and very loving and generous. I will miss her and will always honor her deeply in my heart and in my memories. My heart breaks for her family and Bowie 💔.”
